Fragile is a long term project in collaboration with my younger sister Gioia Di Biagio.
The project has grown out since 2011 from the desire to tell, through the medium of photography, the way she lives daily and perceives her rare disease.
It is about her, about Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and about our relationship.
When she was seven years old, she was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome, a rare connective tissue disorder caused by a defect in the synthesis of protein collagen. It involves mainly the skin, which is hyper-elastic, fragile, tending to break and it is difficult to heal.
By working together with Gioia and taking pictures of her, I am allowed to further my understanding on how she lives daily and perceives her own body.
The photos presented in the project have been shot by me since 1997.

Fragile è un progetto a lungo termine, in collaborazione con mia sorella Gioia.
L'idea è nata dal desiderio di voler raccontare, attraverso la fotografia, il modo in cui Gioia vive e percepisce la malattia rara che le è stata diagnosticata quando aveva 7 anni.
Il racconto è su Gioia, sulla sindrome di Ehlers Danlos e sulla nostra relazione.
La sindrome di Ehlers Danlos colpisce prevalentemente il tessuto connettivo ed è causata da un difetto nella sintesi della proteina del collagene: la pelle è iper-elastica, fragile, con tendenza alla facile rottura e difficile da cicatrizzare.
Lavorare insieme a Gioia e fotografarla, mi ha permesso di andare più a fondo e capire meglio come vive quotidianamente con il suo corpo e la percezione che ha di esso.
Le foto incluse in Fragile sono state scattate da me dal 1997.
